2008 jeep compass review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Small crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe jeep compass is a car-based vehicle that's enjoyable to drive and comes with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. First introduced as a 2007 model, the compass is built on a front-wheel-drive, car-based structure, a modified version of the platform that supports the mitsubishi lancer and jeep patriot.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. It's a solid, sophisticated, 16-valve engine. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt comes with the auto stick manual shiftgate feature for 2008. The auto stick enables the driver to shift up and down over six preset gear ratios, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal.  also new for 2008, jeep has recalibrated the engine and transaxle for improved drivability and reduced noise. Chrome interior accents brighten the 2008 models, and air conditioning and a tire-pressure monitor are standard equipment.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Power windows and power door locks are optional, however. Some cannot.  inside, the compass is thoughtfully designed. The instruments and controls are well placed and easy to use, though the materials feel cut rate. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass comes as two models, sport and limited, each with front-wheel drive (2wd) or all-wheel drive (awd). It comes standard with a five speed manual transmission or a cvt automatic 1100) with auto stick manual shiftgate. It makes 158 hp and 141 pound-feet of torque and only comes with the cvt.  the 2wd sport 16,475) and awd sport 18,225) come standard cloth upholstery; air conditioning; outside-temperature indicator; am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary audio jack; vinyl load floor; center console sliding armrest with cell phone or mp3 pocket; 60/40 split rear seat; tilt steering column; fog lamps; roof rails; and p215/60r17 tires on aluminum wheels. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents.  options for the limited include the sport options, plus its own security and cargo convenience group 495) with daytime running lights, alarm, cargo cover, and jeep's uconnect wireless cell phone link; chrome-plated 18-inch aluminum wheels 825); the boston acoustics sound system 495); and a dvd-based navigation system with six-disc cd changer 1,395). A rallye group for sport 1,985) and limited 1,850) includes driving lamps, a rear stabilizer bar, rear spoiler, bright exhaust tip, and mopar body trim; for sport, it also adds p215/55r18 tires on aluminum wheels.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags; tire-pressure monitor; antilock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop); traction control; and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Torso-protecting side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants are optional 250) and we recommend them. walkaroundjeep sent its brand in a new direction in 2007, introducing two car-based suvs, the compass and patriot. Of the two, the compass has more of a crossover look, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels and more laid back lines. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line. (the patriot, on the other hand, is more upright, looking like a smaller version of the commander and a throwback to the old cherokee. Jeep's other compact suv, the liberty, is redesigned for 2008. It looks similar to the patriot, but is even more upright and masculine.)  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle, while those of the patriot and liberty are vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the others, again, are square.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's slightly lower than that of the patriot and almost five inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roof rails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The sport is available with jeep's yes essentials upholstery, a rugged fabric that's stain, odor and static resistant. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The interior isn't very exciting to look at (boring in beige but better in gray) and the feel is far from luxurious. But it is quite functional. The center stack is wide and intelligently designed: rectangular vents on top, a single-disc am/fm/cd stereo below it, and below that a slot that might hold a paperback book. Lower still are three climate control knobs and various buttons for options (including the available heated seats). The shift lever, manual or automatic, sprouts from the dash below these buttons. This practical high forward position was introduced by honda, but actually originated in rally racing cars, where ergonomics really matter.  moving rearward, between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cell phone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can slide forward three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on th.

2011 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Compact suv delivers affordable capability. introductionthe jeep patriot is unmistakably from the jeep garage, with its squared-off lines, seven-slot grille, and round headlights. The patriot and its sibling, the jeep compass, are based on a car platform, but still deliver moderate off-road ability.  for 2011, jeep patriot has been significantly updated. The 2011 patriot features fresh styling, upgraded suspension and steering, new interior materials, and a revised model lineup. There's adult-size headroom and legroom for rear-seat passengers. The smaller engine is 2. 0 liters, makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The optional continuously variable transaxle works well and we found the auto stick manual-shift feature useful.  we found the patriot light and nimble on twisty roads and when maneuvering around town. The independent suspension works well. During a long day of driving on patchy two-lanes, hard-packed dirt roads, sandy off-road trails, shallow rivers and deep gullies, it delivered steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation.  the patriot is available with front-wheel drive or a choice of two all-wheel-drive systems, one that jeep qualifies as trail rated. Those who like to go off the pavement (or tow more than 1000 pounds) should choose the trail-rated freedom ii awd system. All-wheel drive versions also have the 2. 4-liter engine and rear disc brakes. Options include front side airbags 250), 17-inch aluminum wheels 640), air conditioning 895), media center radio 350), and the power value package 1,405) with remote keyless entry, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors. An all-weather group 795) adds tow hooks, block heater, floor mats, daytime running lights, aluminum wheels and p215/65r17 tires.  patriot latitude x 22,195) gets the big engine and rear disc brakes, chrome trim, climate control, leather upholstery, power driver's seat, sirius radio and a 6cd/dvd audio system. Options include upgrades to radio 290) with garmin navigation 695), boston-acoustics speakers 650), plus the sun & sound, security & convenience, and tow packages.  optional on any patriot are uconnect phone with bluetooth and/or web service and a smoker's package. The freedom ii off-road group 550) upgrades 4wd models with a bigger alternator, skid plates, electronic traction assists, tow hooks, floor mats, p215/65r17 tires and full-size spare; it requires the cvt2l automatic transmission 1050). (all new car test drive prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.)  safety features on all patriot models include dual front airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, abs with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, and active front head restraints. Torso-protecting front side impact airbags are an option we recommend. walkaroundthe patriot has jeep's favorite styling cues, namely round headlights and seven vertical openings for a grille, in a boxy shape with fairly upright windshield and hatch. On patriot latitude x models much trim is done in bright surfaces but we find the body-color trim of the other models more appealing, and more befitting a jeep. Tow hooks and roof-rail crossbars are optional, and we'd prefer the fog lamps were further apart.  eschewing trends to make everything lower and more car-like, the 2011 patriot rides a little bit higher than the 2010 version and it has half-an-inch more ground clearance. To that end the rear bumper on the 2011 patriot is deeper and almost totally hides the muffler that looked like a large industrial afterthought on earlier versions.  the jeep patriot is considered a compact, although it looks larger. With a lot of space between front and rear wheels and overall length less than 15 feet, the lack of bodywork beyond the wheels adds dimension and improves backcountry accessibility. It's only a couple of inches from identical height and width and the ground clearance matches many heavy-duty pickup trucks.  the standard wheels are 16-inch steel. Attractive 17-inch aluminum wheels are standard on latitude and x models, and optional for the sport. The latitude x gets leather upholstery which previously seemed to overdress the patriot; it fits better in the revised 2011 interior but we're still adapting to jeep and leather in the same sentence.  interior materials have been revamped for 2011. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. Jeep says the available uconnect tunes system can hold up to 6700 songs, which can be ripped from a cd or usb memory stick. We thought the doors sounded kind of tinny when they were closed.  the space between the seats includes a nook for change or cell phones, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. The center console is split for two levels of storage and is now padded.  the door pockets are on the small side, but they can hold six cd cases; much of the space is taken up by the 6x9-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. There's a nice tray over the good-sized glove compartment that's big enough for books.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split. It folds flat easily. Simply flip up the seat cushion and flop down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front passenger seat. With the rear seats folded flat, there's a spacious 54. 2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Fold down the passenger seat, and the patriot has room for something eight feet long. With all the seats in use there's 23 cubic feet in the back, comparable with any compact suv.  the hatch glass does not open separately but the hatch itself isn't that heavy. A removable carpeted floor lines the cargo area and hides a real full-size spare tire underneath on most models. That cargo deck is a relatively high 31 inches off the floor so the maximum cargo height opening is 27. 4 inches, and taller people should watch their head beneath the open hatch. driving impressionthe jeep patriot comes with a choice of engines. The larger 2. 4-liter engine works best. It has good power, with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque, and is responsive where it needs to be. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The smaller engine needs to be revved quite a bit to make power, however. So for the minimal price difference and the extra torque, we recommend the larger 2. 4-liter engine.  the 5-. 1997 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Athletic luxury. introductionone of the most recognized brand names in the world, jeep comes in three flavors--the classic wrangler, the cherokee and the grand cherokee, luxury version of the jeep brand and the most popular member of its tribe. The grand cherokee outsells all sport-utilities but the ford explorer in the u. Market--about 280,000 sales in 1996, a healthy 12% increase over 1995.  the grand cherokee itself comes in several interesting levels--laredo, limited and the orvis edition, named for the outdoor gear company and similar in character to the explorer eddie bauer models. It builds from there to the 5. 2-liter v8 limited and orvis models. These include selec-trac, with a fixed torque split between front and rear, and quadra-trac, which normally puts all the torque to the rear axle but can automatically vary torque fore and aft at any proportion between zero and 100%, assuring that the power always goes to the tires that have the traction.  and, for those who want the power and the space without the complexity of a heavy 4wd system, in 1997 the basic 2wd model is available for the first time with the 5. 2-liter v8 engine option.  the grand cherokee limited comes with a large load of standard equipment--as well it should for a starting price of $31,885--including air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power mirrors, power locks, 10-way power seats with power recline and lumbar systems, tinted glass, a remote locking/security system, leather trim, tilt steering, cruise control, aluminum wheels, premium am/fm/cassette audio, fog lamps, a roof rack, and a pair of consoles, one overhead, one between the front seats.  the limited package 1290) adds heated seats, a power sunroof, and an upgraded sound system with three-band graphic equalizer. The typical jeep white-on-black instruments, with color accents, are easy to scan and very good at night.  the leather seats are very comfortable for long rides, and have a wide range of power adjustments, with a two-driver memory feature for the seats, radio stations and mirrors. We wouldn't stretch it to five adults, at least not for any long rides. The interior simply isn't roomy enough for five real people.  but the ride is quiet and comfortable, more comfortable than any other jeep, as well as most of its competitors. Of torque for hauling up to 5000 pounds of trailer, with an improvement in mpg rating from 13/17 city/highway for the v8 to 15/20 for the six, quite a lot in percentage terms.  we have been off-road many times with the 4. 0 in the grand and other jeep models, and it never let us down.  while the shift is on to rack-and-pinion steering in the sport-utility world, the grand cherokee still uses recirculating-ball steering, and it is a bit mushy and indefinite compared to other systems, though entirely acceptable. It works with leading-arm coil-spring front suspension and trailing arm coil-spring rear suspension and gas shocks all around to keep the grand cherokee on the straight and narrow.  ride quality is very good, all things considered, and ride control is taut, with not too much body roll in fast corners. When it comes to all-around handling, the grand cherokee is one of the most nimble performers in its class.  we noticed while underway that the big outside mirrors and windshield pillars seem to generate quite a bit of wind noise at freeway speeds, which was doubly intrusive because the powertrain noise and chassis noise were both so well subdued by tuning and isolation. We thought at first we hadn't closed the left front door all the way, but the noise persisted at speeds above 50 mph. summarywhile the ford explorer continues to rule the sport-utility realm, the jeep grand cherokee is still solidly in second place, in spite of being one of the oldest entries in its class.  and while the preponderance of grand cherokees sold are laredo and limited six-cylinder models, there is still plenty of room in the market for the ultimate jeep. At more than $37,000 it's well into the luxury realm, but it's got style, power, plenty of equipment and very serious off-road capability for those who shun the beaten track. assembled indetroit, mi. options as testedv8 engine, heated seats, power sunroof, upgraded audio, up country suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, 3. 73:1 rear axle, gas shocks, locking rear differential. model testedlimited. 2009 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This makes the grand cherokee a fine choice for families who venture off-road or vacation in the mountains or other remote areas.  its edgy and angular lines make it instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustments, and excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield posts.  with nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space, the grand cherokee is useful for hauling whatever a family may need.  a wide range of engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is updated for 2009, increasing from 330 to 357 horsepower. The hemi is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi v8 and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The diesel engine makes it frugal for an suv of its size.  grand cherokee was last redesigned for the 2005 model year. Hill-start assist holds the brakes on a hill to allow smooth launches. Air conditioning is standard, along with cloth upholstery, cruise control, power windows, power heated mirrors, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, sirius satellite radio, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment, roof rack and p245/65r17 tires with alloy wheels. Quadra-drive ii full-time active 4wd is optional 795) with either engine. Quadra-drive ii adds low-range gearing, hill ascent and descent control, a special axle ratio, and front, center, and rear limited-slip differentials. It also comes with skid plates and front tow hooks. The laredo can be ordered with the 4. 7-liter v8 930). If this engine is chosen with awd, the price is $1730 and it also comes with quadra-trac ii, which includes low-range gearing. The limited also comes with jeep's uconnect gps and uconnect phone. Uconnect gps includes a navigation system with voice recognition and real-time traffic, a 6. 5-inch touch-screen, an ipod adapter and a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and picture files, as well as navigation map information. Uconnect phone provides a wireless cell phone link. Limited 4wd 39,010) gets all that plus hill start assist, hill descent control, and quadra-trac ii with low-range gearing. Quadra-drive ii is an option.  the 4. 7-liter v8 is optional for both 2wd 930) and 4wd 1580) limiteds. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is optional 1750) for both 2wd and 4wd limiteds, and the 3. 0-liter turbo-diesel v6 is optional for both 2wd 2760) and 4wd 3560) models. Other options consist of a rear dvd entertainment system with sirius backseat tv 1720), chrome 18-inch wheels 995), class ii and iv trailer hitches 280-$430), and high-intensity discharge headlamps with auto leveling 500). Sirius backseat tv includes three child-oriented channels: cartoon network, disney channel and nickelodeon.  grand cherokee overland 41,110) comes with the 5. 7-liter hemi v8, and adds a wood-and-leather steering wheel, real wood accents on the doors and console, two-tone leather and ultra-suede seats embroidered with the overland logo, a leather-covered console and armrest, the high-intensity discharge headlamps with auto leveling, a class iv trailer hitch, and chromed 18-inch aluminum wheels with p245/50r18 tires. Platinum accents highlight the exterior. Overland 4wd 44,545) adds quadra-drive ii. The 3. 0-liter diesel engine is optional for 2wd and 4wd overland models 1010).  grand cherokee srt8 42,665) comes with a 6. 1-liter hemi rated at 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension, performance brakes, its own electronic all-wheel-drive system, and p244/45r20 front and p285/40r20 rear run-flat tires. Distinctive bumper fascias and 20-inch wheels make srt8 instantly identifiable. Also standard are auto-dimming rearview and exterior mirrors and automatic headlights. Also available are rear obstacle detection, a rear backup camera, hill descent control, hill start assist, and trailer sway control. walkaroundlast redesigned for 2005, the grand cherokee looks square-edged but modern, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris.  while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear frame modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. The grand cherokee has earned a five-star safety rating in both front and side impact tests from the federal government.  limited models present a flashier appearance than laredos, with a chromed grille, bright inserts in the bumpers, and accent-color bodyside molding.  the overland is distinguished by mesh-texture grille inserts between its traditional vertical grille bars, which are platinum in finish; platinum accents also appear on the bumpers, side moldings, roof-rack side rails, liftgate light bar, and mirrors. The wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are brushed stainless.  jeep reached deep into its heritage for the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken.  the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more buff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. interiorthe seats are large and cushy (in all trim levels except srt8). In laredo models, they are upholstered in cloth with leather as a package option, while limited seats are two-tone leather with perforated inserts. In overland, the seats are upholstered in saddle-perforated high-contrast two-tone ultrasuede, featuring accent piping and embroidered overland logos. Overland also features real wood trim on the steering wheel, instrument panel, door panels, and gear selector.
