2004 chevrolet corvette review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Commemorative editions mark the last of the c5s. introductionthe 2004 model year is the swan song for the fifth-generation chevrolet corvette, and will mark the best year for the c5s. Le mans blue paint and polished wheels distinguish the 2004 corvette commemorative edition models. Their interiors are shale-colored, with a matching top on the convertible. the high-performance z06 benefits from suspension tuning for 2004 based on extensive testing at germany's fabled nurburgring racetrack and general motors milford proving grounds. The goal was improved ride quality, but the revised z06 suspension also feels 'more tied down, more glued to the road,' according to chevrolet. Sporting a c5-r le mans stripe, the z06 commemorative edition gets a lightweight carbon fiber hood. for the past 50 years, the corvette has been america's sports car, a u. S.-production two-seater capable of real racetrack performance. The corvette endures because it has always represented a performance value. The c5 does this in a big way, boasting performance and handling matched only by the dodge viper, porsche 911 and various exotics, all of which are far more expensive. but some of that misses the point. There's really nothing quite like the corvette. Driving each of the c5 models, whether it's a coupe, convertible, or the z06, is always a visceral experience. Most powerful is the z06 hardtop, with 405 horsepower on tap. The coupe is the most practical, offering nearly twice as much trunk space as the convertible or hardtop models. The convertible is sometimes the most enjoyable, however. The coupe's rear window opens like a hatchback. The hardtop and convertible have trunks. The coupe comes with a parcel net and luggage shade. Child restraint attachment system (cras) hooks are provided in the passenger and the passenger-side air bag can be manually shut off while carrying children. The z06 hardtop adds a head-up instrument display, titanium exhaust, a tire inflator kit for its goodyear eagle f1 tires, and forged alloy wheels. The six-speed manual is the only transmission offered. commemorative editions add $3,700 to the retail prices of the coupe and convertible, $4,335 to the msrp of the z06 with its carbon fiber hood. walkaroundthe corvette's flowing front fenders are handsome when viewed either from outside or behind the wheel, while the bulging rear end is reminiscent of the imsa gtp corvettes of the late '80s. Putting the top down exposes body-colored trim behind the seats that reminds us of an open-cockpit racer. It looks really cool. the z06 hardtop presents a different profile from the coupe. The hardtop roofline is actually more coupe-like than the coupe's, whose hatchback glass slopes more steeply. Other visible differences between the coupe and hardtop are subtle, including tidy z06 emblems on each side of the hardtop. Modest mesh air intakes in the nose and wedge-shaped mesh brake cooling inlets are visible on the rocker panels just aft the doors. Special five-spoke aluminum wheels afford a view of big red brake calipers and are fitted with massive goodyear f1 supercar rubber, p265/40zr up front, p295/35zr out back. It was intended as a street racer with track capabilities, chevrolet's one-up response to ford's mustang cobra r. The designation z06 has a rich history, dating back to the 1963 split-window sting ray, when the z06 was a pure road-racing package. (the z comes from zora arkus-duntov, the corvette's famous first chief engineer.) chevrolet has revived the z06 designation for this more-than-worthy successor. Using thinner glass, a titanium exhaust system and less insulation saves the weight. Don't bother arguing that insulation is a creature comfort; with a car like this, noise and spiritual comfort level are intertwined. Ask anyone who's driven a noisy racecar. corvette's lever-style door handles seem a bit dated, harder to grab than other designs. interiorc5 corvettes come with comfortable cabins, something that wasn't always true of previous-generation models. Low doorsills and narrow side rails make getting in and out easier than before. The seats are comfortable and there's plenty of room for driver and passenger, though there isn't a lot of space for stuff. Front seat space in the three models is pretty much the same. The power seats have a memory function and the handsome analog gauges are easier to use and more satisfying than the old digital displays. the manually operated convertible top stows neatly under a body-colored cover that folds flat at the forward edge of the trunk lid. The soft top is very nice. It's made of high-quality material and the rear window is glass. Riding in the convertible with the top down is very pleasant and lots of fun with much aural feedback. There's very little buffeting at speed. the corvette is not a quiet car, but the rattles and stress squeaks that have haunted corvettes for so long have largely been eliminated. We noticed more road noise and engine noise in the convertible than in the coupe, and even more comes through in the z06. However, this is a sports car, and noise, particularly the calculated growl of that terrific v8, is part of the deal. rearward visibility is a little limited. The rear window is a narrow slot. The side mirrors are wide, but not tall, and work fairly well. Arriving at the airport after a trip halfway around the world, we were able to cram two huge duffel bags into a coupe. The coupe's trunk can hold 24. 8 cubic feet of cargo, considerably more than the convertible's 13. 9 cubic feet and the hardtop's 13. 3 cubic feet. The convertible's trunk sits on top of the rear deck. It's an efficient space with a flat load floor. The corvette is a beast. the standard corvette engine, the ls1 v8, is potent. Stand on the throttle and it's fast traffic. It produces 350 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque with the six-speed manual transmission, and 360 pound-feet with the automatic. the corvette is quick out of the gate, whether equipped with the automatic or manual. While we prefer the six-speed, we have to admit that the automatic rams its shifts home with authority, and there's enough muscle in the ls1 v8 to cover the performance penalties associated with auto-shifters. 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth ride, but built like a rock. introductiongm has been the leader in full-size pickups for several years running, but is now facing assaults from all directions. Ford has introduced an all-new f-150. Dodge recently re-engineered the ram. Toyota has introduced a tundra crew cab model. And if that isn't enough, nissan has the gall to launch the titan, a full-size pickup that's every bit as big as the domestics, if not bigger. Model year 2004 is the year of the pickup. Those who value a smooth-riding truck with a low load height should take a good hard look at a two-wheel-drive silverado. And those who value style could do worse. Silverado's aggressive looks draw the eye. This truck is not the wallflower it was a couple of years ago. silverado got an edgy new look last year, along with significant interior improvements and an all-new electrical system designed to improve reliability by drastically reducing the number of wires running all over the place. It's all be streamlined. new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable 1500 silverado crew cab in either 2wd or 4wd. (this is a half-ton model that should not be confused with last year's heavy-duty 1500 hd.) there’s more standard equipment in base-level models for 2004, and there's more content in the z71 off-road package. silverado rides, handles, and stops as well as the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. It is, as chevy says, like a rock. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8. the 2004 silverado comes with more standard features than last year, including cruise control, power door locks, black bodyside moldings, chrome bumpers, uplevel wheels, and an am/fm radio with cd player. New tire choices are available as well. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim. silverado options include xm satellite radio, which provides cd-quality broadcast of 100 digital channels coast to coast, and a bose sound system. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system and rear-seat audio controls. A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. They look like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant saying, 'get out of the way, private, i've got work to do.' a large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, including the fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. Add the powerful hood and the silverado presents an appearance that's almost menacing. Squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The standard front bench seat is comfortable and can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It’s split 40/20/40, and the middle part of the bench folds down to become a center console armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. Bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The silverado's seats are big and cushy, but not as comfortable as those in the ram and f-150. the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel, redesigned for 2003, features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. The manually controlled system that comes on base models is a good, straightforward design. Manual sliders are used to adjust the temperature the available electronic climate controls are better, featuring two large knobs for driver and passenger.
